You don't have to shave your head if you decide not to have dreadlocks.

Hair once locked can't be open or straightened again. This gives the idea that one would have to shave his/ her head if they choose not to have dreadlocks anymore. Once you get dreadlocks, the hair that grows doesn't grow as dreads. This leads to straight unlocked hair at the roots, which continue as dreads. One can grow up to 2 inches of these straight hair and cut off the dreads if they choose to.
