It is not true that hair must be kept dirty or unwashed to be locked.

One of the most popular questions asked to any person with dreadlocks has to be "do you take a bath/ wash your hair?" .It is a common misconception that hair that is locked shouldn't be washed or else it wont stay that way. People don't usually understand that it isn't really the washing but the combing that keeps the hair untangled. Also Dreadlocks gets stereotyped as a hairstyle of the "homeless" or "pot heads", the ones who don't bathe/ wash their hair often. This is not true. Dreadlocks is a very clean and healthy hairstyle. It doesn't require as much looking after as the normal hair but washing is an essential part of growing long and strong dreads.

Dreadlocks are just like normal hair. They are just a variation in the texture of what your hair looks like. It isn't a transformation or mutation that took place. The care and looking after although a little less does exist. Dreadlocks can be washed as easily as normal hair. Wash the same way a sponge is washed and rinse with good amount of water. Dreadlocks take slightly longer to dry than normal hair but wrapping them in a dry towel for 15 - 20 minutes would dry them quickly. You could also use a hair dryer to dry your dreads.
It is suggested that one uses a non-residue shampoo or soap for washing their dreads. Washing the scalp thoroughly, washing sections from roots to tips and then rinsing them under the shower is more than enough.
